I first approached WHFS in early 2016. I was struggling to deal with the emotional toll of the domestic violence that regularly occurred in my family and my partner’s gambling addiction.
I had already tried to leave my relationship multiple times before, but I was always too scared that I would put my children in danger.
For about half a year, my counsellor helped me to understand the ways my husband was using his power to manipulate me. Together, we created a safety plan for my children and me whenever things got out of hand.
Then, my counsellor helped me to work through my experiences of trauma in my family. This helped me in my day to day life, as I was already starting to change the ways through which I thought of myself, men and others around me. I also learnt about things like domestic violence and gambling dependency.
I felt supported by the community for the first time in a long time.
I was helped with Emergency Relief money which helped me to have a roof over my head, food and personal hygiene products. I used all the services my counsellor recommended. This really helped me feel supported by the community for the first time in a long time.
When my children and I safely left my abusive relationship with my husband, I started feeling hopeful for a brighter future for me and my children. I continued to use the services at WHFS like Power to Change and Moving On because they improved my wellbeing. Now, I am studying in tertiary education to start my career and have moved on to start dating.
