Yoga Nidra with Tanja

Women’s Health & Family Services runs a number of workshops that can help improve overall health and wellbeing, from Toddler Yoga to Dance and Movement classes.
These workshops can benefit our physical activity, relaxation and even lead to better sleep. I recently had the privilege of joining our resident Wellbeing Practitioner, Tanja, for a Yoga Nidra workshop.
Tanja has been with Women’s Health & Family Services for over five years and has a wealth of experience in Yoga, Meditation, Aquatic Fitness and other types of physical activity. Tanja is passionate about what she does and is committed to making sure everyone gets the most out of her workshops.
I accompanied Tanja to her Yoga Nidra workshop at Balga TAFE for migrant English students. Yoga Nidra is an ancient yogic practice that is becoming increasingly popular as both a form of meditation, a tool to combat insomnia, and body therapy. It focuses on creating a state of deep relaxation in the physical body whilst maintaining alertness in the mind. It is a powerful tool for improving relaxation and reducing stress.
Tanja led us through sessions for two different groups of English students. We began by lying down, drawing our attention to the breath, and focusing on relieving tension within the body. Tanja guided us through the Yoga Nidra meditation. She played Tibetan singing bowls that enhanced the experience with relaxing and immersive sounds. The singing bowls create sound vibration that mimic the frequencies of nature sounds. Tanja then took us through some gentle fascia (connective tissue) release stretches and positive affirmations.
In the middle of a busy day, it can be difficult to prioritise taking the time to look after ourselves and reduce our stress. This workshop provided us with an introduction to tools that could help us achieve deeper rest states into our hectic lives without investing a great deal of time. It was a rewarding experience for the English students who reflected that the sessions made them feel calm and refreshed, even amongst the bustle of a TAFE campus.
